Hand in is today 17:30, Thursday 3 March. I am not sure how soon I will have these corrected.

Assignment 2

Assignment 2 will have a hand-in date of 25 April: the Monday of Week 11. You should receive the assignment around or before 4 April.

Week 5

We finished our study of the method of undetermined coefficients.

Week 6

We will start looking at “The Engineer’s Transform” — the Laplace Transform.

Assignment 1

Assignment 1 had a hand-in time of 16:00 this Thursday March 3. I will extend this to 17:30. If you have the assignment completed on Thursday hand it to me in class otherwise drop it in A283. Work submitted after 17:30 on Thursday 3 March will be assigned a mark of zero. Hand up whatever you have on time.

Week 4

We looked at the heat distribution of a plate and also started chapter 2.

Week 5

We will finish looking at the method of undetermined coefficients..

Assignment: Typo

Question 1.2 (a). The right-hand side of the second equation is wrong. It should be c_1^2+10c_1 rather than c_1^2+10.

Catch-Up Lecture

The ‘Catch-Up’ Lecture will take place the Monday of Week 4, Monday 22 February at 09:00 in B214.

Week 3

If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a Maple Tutor that is easy to use and will help you with Gaussian Elimination. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors ->Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.

We did some examples of partial pivoting and then we looked at applications of Linear Systems: traffic flow and pipe networks.

Week 4

We will look at the heat distribution of a plate and perhaps start Chapter 2.

Repeat Students — particularly EXAM ONLY

We will now solve temperature distribution problems using the Jacobi Method.

 Week 2

We finished looking at Gaussian Elimination. If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a Maple Tutor that is easy to use and will help you. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors ->Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.

We started looking at Gaussian Elimination with Partial Pivoting — absolutely necessary if you are using decimal rounding.

Week 3

We will do some examples of partial pivoting and then will look towards applications of Linear Systems.

Manuals

The manuals are  available in the Copy Centre and must be purchased as soon as possible.

Week 1

We started the first chapter on Linear Algebra. Essentially, for us, simultaneous equations. We looked at Gaussian Elimination — and saw the case of infinite solutions. If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a Maple Tutor that is easy to use and will help you. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors ->Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.

Week 2

We will continue this work.

Assessment 1

Assessment 1 will have a hand-in date of Thursday March 3 (Week 5). Expect to see the assignment next week.

Assignments 2

I hope to have the corrections finished tomorrow. If not it will be Monday but no later.

Week 12

We finished the last chapter on Multiple Integration including triple integrals.

Week 13

We will first go over the sample and then have tutorial time.

Assignments 2

Assignment 2 is here. The data is here (there was originally an error in column P of the second sheet – this has since been fixed).  Recall that you no longer have to do question 5. I will be here in A283 until 5.55 pm on Monday and if you miss deadline you will be given a mark of ZERO.

EDIT: Worked Solutions here.

Week 10

We looked at Systems of Differential Equations.

Week 11

We will begin the last chapter on Multiple Integration with double integrals.

Week 12

We will finish the last chapter on Multiple Integration including triple integrals.

Assignments 2

Assignment 2 is here. The data is here (there was originally an error in column P of the second sheet – this has since been fixed).  I recommend that in question five that rather than using M(x) for the bending moment, that you use m(x) instead so you can use

\mathcal{L}\{m(x)\}=M(s).

Week 9

We did some full Laplace Transform questions and had some time to start working on Assignment 2

Week 10

In Week 10 you will have one more class dedicated to working on Assignment 2. We will also look at Systems of Differential Equations and begin the last chapter on Multiple Integration
