30% Test 2 – Equivalence Relations & Graphs

Test 2 takes place 6 p.m. Wednesday 23 November in the Melbourn Hall.

We have now completed the material for Test 2. Everything in Chapters 1 and 2 is examinable, with the emphasis on transitive and equivalence relations as well as Chapter 2. You may be required to use algebra to prove that a relation is reflexive, symmetric, or transitive.

There is a sample test on p.88 of the test. This is only to give you an idea of the type of content (but not specific questions) that will be examined. The test may be a little longer and/or harder.

Please note:

• Do not to congregate outside the Melbourn Hall until 10 minutes before the assessment is due to commence and do wait outside until you are ready to begin your assessment.

• Be mindful of groups already in the hall when entering the exam hall.

• Do not congregate in the waiting area of the Melbourn building when the assessment has finished as the noise can disrupt the students completing their assessment.

• Leave their bags in the shelved area just inside the exam hall doors – not on the floor in the exam hall lobby.  As we get busier, space will become scarce in the shelved area so if possible, only bring essential items (pens, calculators etc.) to the venue.

Week 7

We finished Chapter 3, by talking about inverses, and looked at some examples of invertible functions that we will use in the chapter on Algebra… which we started.

In tutorial we focused on Test 2 material.

Week 8

We will drive into Chapter 4 Algebra. We have nine lectures to cover Algebra and the rest of Functions (Chapter 5)

In tutorial, C-X will focus on Test 2, while C-Y will move onto Test 3: Functions & Algebra.

The Friday lecture will be preponed to Thursday 17 November at 10:00 in C212.

Assignment 2

Assignment 2 based on Chapter 2 is on Canvas now: Canvas —> MATH7019 —> Assignments. It is due in two weeks.

Week 8

Due to a technical issue the week started with two tutorials. We looked at Euler’s Method and then we started looking at Chapter 3, where we discussed some of the theory of probability, including random variables, events, mutual exclusivity, and independence.

Week 9

We will look at the normal distribution (more calculation focused), and then start looking at sampling.

We will probably have only one tutorial (Tuesday).

Academic Learning Centre

I would urge anyone having any problems with material that isn’t being addressed in the tutorial communication to use the Academic Learning Centre. If you are a little worried about your maths this semester you need to be aware of this resource. You will get best results if you come to the helpers there with specific questions.

No MATH6040 classes Friday 18 November (Week 9)

The Friday lecture will be preponed to Monday 14 November at 13:00 in B190. I appreciate this is not a good slot for all students, so I will point towards a video lecture that can partially substitute for it.

The Friday tutorial will be moved to Tuesday 15 November at 13:00 in B240.

Test 2

Test 2 is booked for the Tuesday of Week 11:

29/11/202218.00-19.00MATH6040Technological Maths 20155A – C

See Canvas —> MATH6055 —> Assignments, for more information, including sample tests (although note all those questions can be found in the Chapter 3 exerices).

Week 8

We will look at more applications of integration, to centroids and centres of gravity. We started Chapter 4 with a revision class on differentiation.

Week 9

We will drive into Chapter 4, talking first about transforms, and then functions of several variables and partial differentiation. We should be able to look at applications of partial differentiation to error analysis.

The tutorials will be focused on Chapter 3. We might get some tutorial time on Chapter 4 in lectures.

Outlook

We will complete Chapter 4 over Weeks 10 and 11. The tutorials in Week 11 will be focused on Chapter 3/Test 2, but Week 11 and possibly Week 12 will be focused on Chapter 4. Week 12 lectures will be revision.

No MATH6055 class Friday 18 November (once off in Week 9)

The Friday C-Y tutorial will be preponed to Thursday 17 November at 11:00 in B116.

30% Test 1 – Sets & Relations – Results

These have been released in an announcement.

Week 6

We drove into Chapter 3, on Functions. We saw their definition in terms of a domain, codomain, and a set of ordered pairs. We learned that we can visualise functions with arrow diagrams (usually for small domains), and coordinate graphs (usually for functions that map reals to reals). We learned about the properties of a function: namely 1-1, onto, and bijective. We spoke about compositions.

Week 7

We will finish Chapter 3, by talking about inverses, and look at some examples of invertible functions that we will use in the chapter on Algebra… which we will also start hopefully.

We will focus in tutorial on the Test 2 material.

30% Test 2 – Equivalence Relations & Graphs

Test 2 takes place 6 p.m. Wednesday 23 November in the Melbourn Hall.

Test 2

Test 2 is provisionally booked for the Tuesday of Week 12:

06/12/202218.00-19.00MATH6040Technological Maths 20155A – C

However, this is too late, it should be Week 11, but the Melbourn Hall is provisionally unavailable in Week 11.

I will try and book a large IT room for this test, and I will also try and wing us into the Melbourn for 29 November.

So Test 2 is 99% going to be Tuesday 29 November but just in case I have booked the Melbourn for 6 December. This will be finalised by Week 9.

30% Test 1 – Sets & Relations

Test 1 takes place Wednesday 18:00-19:00, October 26th, Melbourn Exam Hall, Rows A-G

We have now completed the material for Test 1. Everything up to and including equivalence relations but not including equivalence classes is examinable. You may be required to use algebra to prove that a relation is reflexive, symmetric, or transitive.

There is a sample test on p.56 of the test. This is only to give you an idea of the type of content (but not specific questions) that will be examined. The test may be a little longer and/or harder.

Week 6

I was sick on Monday and so students were directed to watch this video.

We had two tutorials and looked at fixed end beams in the other lecture.

Week 7

We will finish looking at cantilevers. We will start looking at Euler’s Method on Friday. There will be two tutorials. Then ye will have your reading week.

Assessment

Assignment 1 corrections are behind due to some personal circumstances. I aim to have these completed at some point in the reading week.

No classes Friday 21 October

Week 6

For most students, Chapters 1 and 2 are easier, but Chapter 3 is the most important part of MATH6040 for third year, so it will have a big focus.

We did a quick revision of integration and anti-differentiation, and then looked at the specific manipulation of completing the square.

Week 7

We will finish talking about completing the square and introduce integration by parts. Integration by parts comes from running the product rule of differentiation backwards.
