Student 12Regarding Q. 4 on p. 74

When I was doing this question I did the following:

Factor the denominator completely:

Then decompose the integrand into partial fractions:

.

I was going through the question and I got .

However these values did not give me the answer pompted on page 74.

I discovered this was because I put before when I was factoring the denominator. ie .

I was wondering is their a rule stating that has to come before or were my values for also correct?

J.P. McCarthyNo this doesn’t make any difference (unless you put your with the wrong linear factor…).

I actually get so I am guessing this is where your problem lies.
