I am emailing a link of this to everyone on the class list every week. If you are not receiving these emails or want to have them sent to another email address feel free to email me at jpmccarthymaths@gmail.com and I will add you to the mailing list.

Week 5*

We spoke about the Gauss-Jordan Algorithm for finding matrix inverses and saw how they are useful in solving matrix equations. In particular, we saw that we can rewrite and solve a linear system as a matrix equation.

Week 6*

In Week 6 we will look at Determinants and their use in Cramer’s Rule. We might start chapter 2.

Independent Learning: Exercises

You are supposed to be working outside of class and I am supposed to help you with this. Working outside of class means doing the exercises in the notes. Any work that is handed up will be corrected by me. Also you can ask me a question here on this site and I will answer it ASAP.

Questions you can do include (and I am not necessarily suggesting you should do ALL of these):

P.43, Q 1, 3-5 (Q.2 is the same as Q.1)

P.48, Q. 1-3

Easter Catch-Up Class

There will be ‘Maple’ night Wednesday 23 March during the Easter break. Students are strongly advised to attend because although I intend to record the lecture, I cannot guarantee that the recording is successful. In the event of an unsuccessful recording, I will make the relevant notes available. Students who miss this night will have to undertake a Maple catch-up (see below).

Maple Labs

Due to the large number of students attending the module MATH6038 Mathematics for Science 2.2, we now have to introduce a lab split.

If your name is listed under February 2016, 17 Wednesday, 6.00 pm here (i.e. the first column), you should come in at 18:00. Otherwise come in for a 19:15 start.

The following is the proposed schedule for Weeks 3, 5, 1*, 7, 9, 11:

Group 1 – Starts at 18:00 and Finishes at 20:50:

Wednesdays 18:00-19:05 – Maple Lab in room C128

Wednesdays 19:15-20.55 – Theory class in room C214

Group 2 – Starts at 19:15 and Finishes at 22:00:

Wednesdays 19:15-20.55 – Theory class in room C214

Wednesdays 20:55-22:00 – Maple Lab in room C128

Maple Catch Up

If you want to do Maple catch up (if you miss a lab) you have two options:

  • download the Maple file from your email, do the exercises in Maple (either in a new worksheet or on top of the original file with the exercises), save the worksheet and email me the worksheet you were working on.
  • come in for a double Maple session on a ‘Maple’ night

Test 1

Test 1 will take place 6 April in Week 8 in B149.
