No classes Friday 21 October

Week 6

For most students, Chapters 1 and 2 are easier, but Chapter 3 is the most important part of MATH6040 for third year, so it will have a big focus.

We did a quick revision of integration and anti-differentiation, and then looked at the specific manipulation of completing the square.

Week 7

We will finish talking about completing the square and introduce integration by parts. Integration by parts comes from running the product rule of differentiation backwards.

Outlook

In Week 8 we will look at some applications. We will start Chapter 4 in Week 9, and a sample test for Test 2, on Chapter 3, will appear in Week 9.

Test 2

Test 2 is provisionally booked for the Tuesday of Week 12:

06/12/202218.00-19.00MATH6040Technological Maths 20155A – C

However, this is too late, it should be Week 11, but the Melbourn Hall is provisionally unavailable in Week 11.

I will try and book a large IT room for this test, and I will also try and wing us into the Melbourn for 29 November.

So Test 2 is 99% going to be Tuesday 29 November but just in case I have booked the Melbourn for 6 December. This will be finalised by Week 9.

No classes Friday 21 October

The Friday 21 October lecture in B188 is cancelled (not postponed).

The BioEng2B tutorial at 13:00 on Friday 21 October is brought forward to 13:00 on Tuesday 18 October in B240.

Test 1

Results are released with remarks in a Canvas announcement.

Week 5

We finished on matrices, with Cramer’s Rule. In the second Tuesday lecture we had some tutorial time and on Friday we had Concept MCQ on Matrices before doing some revision of integration.

Tutorial time was spent looking at Chapter 2, especially Cramer’s Rule.

Week 6

For most students, Chapters 1 and 2 are easier, but Chapter 3 is the most important part of MATH6040 for third year, so it will have a big focus.

Outlook

In Week 7 we will add two further techniques of integration to your arsenal.

Test 1

The test will be the Tuesday evening, 11 October, of Week 5. See Canvas (MATH6040 —> Assignments) for further details.

Week 4

We continued working on matrices. We looked at Matrix Inverses — “dividing” for Matrices. This allow us to solve matrix equations, including linear systems. We also looked at determinants.

Some deeper discussion here: Why do we multiply matrices like we do?, Why can’t I divide by zero?

Week 5

We will continue working on matrices, in particular Cramer’s Rule.

Tutorials

The most important thing in your MATH6040 world is to attend tutorials regularly.

So far the free choice to attend any of the following is working OK.

  • Wednesday 12 pm in B180 (the official SEE2 tutorial slot),
  • Wednesday 3 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2A slot)
  • Friday 1 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2B + “SEE2 excess” slot)

See here for more.

The manuals are available in the Copy Centre (at a cost of €15). In my opinion the sooner ye purchase them the better, but ye will certainly need them by Week 4.

Tutorials

The official line is that BioEng2A have their tutorial, BioEng2B have their tutorial, and SEE2 have a tutorial, but it is too big, so “The SEE2 excess go to (the) BioEng2B (tutorial)”. I think we have a better set up by allowing all students attend whatever tutorial they want:

  • Wednesday 12 pm in B180 (the official SEE2 tutorial slot),
  • Wednesday 3 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2A slot)
  • Friday 1 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2B + “SEE2 excess” slot)

I think SEE2 students can make all three and BioEng2 students can make two every week, and three some weeks. A number of students have asked can they attend more than one tutorial a week. As long as I can keep getting around to everyone to give one-to-one teaching I am happy with students attending more than one tutorial.

If it happens that the above plan doesn’t work, and some tutorial(s) is too big, I will have to think again.

The most important thing in your MATH6040 world is to attend tutorials regularly.

Test 1

The test will be the Tuesday evening, 11 October, of Week 5. See Canvas (MATH6040 —> Assignments) for further details.

Week 2

In Week 2 we spoke about vector products: the dot product and the vector product.

Week 3

In Week 3 we will Chapter 1, and the material for Test 1, by talking at the applications of vectors to work and moments

Timetable Issues

For this week only, the SEE2 tutorial at 3 pm on Thursday will not go ahead. Instead the SEE2 tutorial will be held in A272 at 12 pm on Wednesday.

Please keep an eye on your email on Monday. If the AV situation is not sorted in A272 by then I will be trying to arrange alternative rooms (which has its own risks).

Week 1

We began our study of Chapter 1, Vector Algebra by studying the difference between a scalar (single number) and a vector (list of numbers). We looked at how to both visualise vectors and describe them algebraically. We learned how to find the magnitude  and direction of a vector, add them and scalar multiply them. We spoke about displacement vectors.

Week 2

In Week 2 we will talk about vector products: the dot product and the vector product.

Test 1

The test will probably be the Tuesday evening, 11 October, of Week 5. Official notice will be given in Week 3. There is a sample test in the notes.

Week 13

We will have revision by doing the Summer 2019 paper at the back of the manual. This will be on the Wednesday night 4 May in B188 as the Monday is a bank holiday.

Perhaps you would be advised to attempt this Summer 2019 paper between now and next week.

Homework/Study

Homework/Study at this time should be concentrated on doing exercises from the manual. It is up to you to decide on what chapters you should focus on.

Week 12

We had Test 2 based on Chapter 3 (results hopefully out this week), and then we finished off Chapter 4 with partial differentiation and error analysis. We skipped pages 199 to 202. These will not be examined the in the summer paper but are covered here (starting 14:35).

Week 13

We will have revision by doing the Summer 2019 paper at the back of the manual. This will be on the Wednesday night 4 May in B188 as the Monday is a bank holiday.

15% Test 2 on Chapter 3

This will now be held at 19:00 25 April. See Canvas – > Assignments for more information (including sample solutions with comments).

Week 11

We had an hour of tutorial on the Test 2 Sample (based on Chapter 3) and then blasted into Chapter 4.

We did related rates and implicit differentiation.

Homework/Study

Homework/Study at this time should be concentrated on the Chapter 3 exercises.

There are exercises on pages 118, 123, 130, 134, 141, 150.

The more you put in obviously the better you will be at this stuff.

If you have somehow got to the stage that you feel you are fully prepared for Test 2 on Chapter 3, you could look at the Week 10 differentiation questions as well as:

  • p.180, Q.1-3
  • p.188, Q.1-4

with additional exercises p.180, Q.4-6, p.190, Q.5-7; with harder exercises p.180 Q.7 and p.190, Q.7 (f)

Week 12

We have Test 2 based on Chapter 3, and then we finish off Chapter 4 with partial differentiation and error analysis. We will have no tutorial time on Chapter 4. I was hoping to maybe skip error analysis but unfortunately I can not. We will be rushing to finish.

15% Test 2 on Chapter 3

This will now be held at 19:00 25 April. See Canvas for more information.

Week 10

With a focus on Chapter 3, we had an hour of tutorial on that, and then blasted into Chapter 4.

We did a review of differentiation and then looked at parametric differentiation.

Homework/Study

Homework/Study at this time should be concentrated on the Chapter 3 exercises.

There are exercises on pages 118, 123, 130, 134, 141, 150.

The more you put in obviously the better you will be at this stuff.

If you have somehow got to the stage that you feel you are fully prepared for Test 2 on Chapter 3, you could look at:

  • p.162, Q. 1-2
  • p.175, Q.1-3

with additional questions p.175, Q.4-7.

Week 11

We are going to have more tutorial time, I am going to print off copies of the sample test for ye (it is on Canvas under the Assignments button). If you want you can try the sample test during the week.

Then we are going to blast into related rates and implicit differentiation.

Week 12

We have Test 2 based on Chapter 3, and then we finish off Chapter 4 with partial differentiation and error analysis. We will have no tutorial time on Chapter 4.

Week 13

We will have revision by doing the Summer 2019 paper at the back of the manual.

Covid Disruption

My covid enforced absence on Monday was very unfortunate because it meant that ye lost out on possibly an hour of tutorial time for Test 2, which was scheduled for Week 11 (3 April).

I have decided that the best course of action is to postpone Test 2 until Week 12 (24 April), and try and get as much tutorial time into Weeks 10 and 11 on Chapter 3… and then you will also have Easter to work prepare for Test 2.

This isn’t a great strategy, because I would have liked ye to work on Chapter 2 over Easter, but I actually think we got some good time spent on tutorial on Chapter 2, so I think I am happy for us to pursue this plan.

15% Test 2 on Chapter 3

This will now be held at 19:00 24 April. See Canvas for more information.

Week 9

Ye were instructed to watch:

Homework/Study

I would strongly recommend completing the following:

I would invite you to try

  • p.134, Q.1-5
  • p.141, Q.1-4
  • p.150, Q.1-3

Additional exercises p.135, Q.6-7, p.142, Q.5-7, p.151, Q.4-5

Please feel free to ask me questions about the exercises via email. In addition, you can hand up your work in class and I will have it correct for the week after.

Week 10

We will have tutorial time on Chapter 3 up until he break and then we will blast into Chapter 4.

Week 11

Depending on how much Chapter 3 tutorial work we get done in Week 10, we might have tutorial time up to the break again and then more blasting of Chapter 4.

Week 12

We have Test 2 based on Chapter 3, and then we finish off Chapter 4. We will have no tutorial time on Chapter 4.

Week 13

We will have revision by doing the Summer 2019 paper at the back of the manual.
