## Week 2

We finished the Gaussian Elimination examples on Monday, and began to look at applications of linear systems to traffic and pipe flow (Thursday).

Someone had an issue with Example 6 on p.26:

This is fixed here (with new additional comments):

We had more than two classes of tutorials — Wednesday and most of the Thursday double.

## Week 3

We will finish the Chapter 1 material and finish the week off with more tutorial time.

## Week 1

We started the first chapter on Linear Algebra. Essentially, for us, simultaneous equations. We looked at Gaussian Elimination including Partial Pivoting, which is required in the presence of rounding. We looked at five examples, and had 15 minutes of tutorial time.

## Gaussian Elimination Tutor

If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a *Maple Tutor* that is easy to use and will help you with Gaussian Elimination. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors -> Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.

## Week 2

We will finish the Gaussian Elimination examples on Monday, and maybe begin to look at applications of linear systems to traffic and pipe flow.

We will have a tutorial on Wednesday.

## Assignment 1

Assignment 1 has a (provisional) hand-in date of Thursday 24 February (Week 5). More information next week once the class list has settled down.

## Week 10

### Lectures

No lectures: all MATH7021 time to be invested into Chapter 3 and Assignment 3. See Week 11, below, if you have completed Assignment **3** and are hoping to look ahead.

### Exercises

**As I send this, there are two slots for feedback over Easter with deadlines of today, 5 April, for feedback, tomorrow, 6 April, and 12 April for feedback 13 April.**

If you are up to date on the Week 7 exercises, put some time into:

Submit work for Canvas feedback by Monday 19 April for video feedback after Tuesday 20 March.

## Weeks 11 and 12

Weeks 11 and 12 will be given over to Chapter 4. Perhaps of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Double Integrals (Links to an external site.) in Week 11 and of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Triple Integrals (Links to an external site.). Students who have already submitted Assignment 3 can look at the old lectures. The material is exactly the same… for the sake of of doing honest work I will be rerecording for Weeks 11 and 12, but if you want to get ahead you can watch these:

I am experiencing a hardware issue at the moment and it is making it difficult to get corrections done.. My promise is to complete corrections of both Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 before the end of Week 9. Sorry for the delay.

## Week 9

### Lectures

No lectures in Week 9. If you are behind please put big time into Chapter 3, catching up.

### Exercises

If you are up to date on the Week 7 exercises, put some time into:

## Outlook

In Week 10 you will also spend all your time doing Chapter 3 Exercises/Assignment 3. It is my intention to continue providing learning support throughout the Easter break.

Section 3.5 Systems of Differential Equations. is important for next year but I have messed up and so it will not be examined. I will record lectures and fill in the notes for ye though during Easter once I am caught up on corrections.

Weeks 11 and 12 are given over to Chapter 4. Perhaps of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Double Integrals in Week 11 and of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Triple Integrals. If I see that students have submitted Assignment 3 early I may record these earlier than Weeks 11 and 12 (or student could look at the old lectures, the ones that say “integrals” here)

*Things are getting very serious now as we start Chapter 3. If you are not putting the time into MATH7021 on Chapter 3 you are going to find yourself way behind and digging yourself into a hole. You have to find regular time to work on Chapter 3. It is my intention to have two hours of Chapter 3 every week until we finish it, and then there are going to be some time where you will be doing Chapter 3 exercises. It is absolutely vital that you put this time into Chapter 3:*

*because without doing so you could be very, very lost on 35% Assignment 3, and*

## Week 6

### Lectures

You could need three hours to watch these two hours of lectures:

- Laplace Transforms Intro (25 minutes)
- Laplace Transforms of Elementary Functions (15 minutes)
- First Shift Theorem and Derivatives (19 minutes)
- Partial Fractions I (30 minutes)
- Partial Fractions II (29 minutes)

### Exercises

You should work on Chapter 4. Make sure to properly (page and question) label any submitted work.

Submit work for Canvas feedback by Monday 8 March for video feedback after Tuesday 9 March. Ideally you don’t submit work that you are certain is correct, but instead submit work you need help and feedback with. Submit the images as a single pdf file. To do this, select all the images in a folder, right-click and press print. It will say something like *How do you want to print your pictures?* Press (Microsoft?) Print to PDF. If possible choose an orientation that has all the images in portrait.

## Week 7

We will crack further into Chapter 3.

*In theory (see Learner Workload) you are supposed to spend seven hours per week on MATH7021: my recommendation is that you watch the lecture material, then spend whatever other time you have for MATH7021 on exercises, and assignments if you are ready for them. It is up to you to decide when you complete learning tasks and timetable yourself. There are four hours of MATH7021 slots on your timetable that you can use if you want.*

- Method of Undetermined Coefficients Theory II (39 minutes)
- Undetermined Coefficients: Non-Homogeneous (28 minutes)
- Undetermined Coefficients: Non-Homogeneous II (16 minutes)

### Exercises

How much time you put into homework is up to you: of course the more time you put in the better but we all have competing interests. You might want to complete Assignment 1, or submit more Chapter 1 exercises for feedback, before doing Chapter 2 exercises.
