15% Assignment 1
This has a revised deadline. Please see Canvas and email.
There is one typo in Problem F:
…but you need to ask yourself is it worth your time to keep going for the sake of one mark (out of 62 out of 35%) that is 0.56 percentage points towards your final grade.
It should be 15% and 0.24 percentage points.
Week 5
On Monday we drove further into Chapter 2, the method of undetermined coefficients for linear differential equations. We more-or-less have it all covered, but we need to see more examples.
On Wednesday we had some concept MCQ on Chapter 1, and then did the last bit of the Chapter 2 theory.
On Thursday most were absent (doing Assignment 1 I presume), but we finished Chapter 2 and had maybe an hour and twenty minutes of tutorial time on Chapter 2. There will be no further (dedicated/recommended) tutorial time on Chapter 2.
Week 6
Things are getting more serious now as we start Chapter 3. We must work hard on this material:
- because without doing so you could be very, very lost on 15% Assignment 2 (and 35% exam question), and
- because if you are going into Level 8 Structural Engineering it will be assumed that you are competent with the Chapter 3 material
Chapter 3 is about “The Engineer’s Transform” — the Laplace Transform. We will look at the first shift theorem, and how the Laplace Transform interacts with differentiation. We will start looking at partial fractions.
There will be no tutorial time. We will have a Chapter 2 Concept MCQ on Wednesday.

Gaussian Elimination Tutor
If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a Maple Tutor that is easy to use and will help you with Gaussian Elimination. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors -> Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.
Week 4
I spoke on academic integrity for Assignment 1 (see also Canvas information) but was not yet able to do the Chapter 1 “concept MCQ” (hopefully Wednesday in Week 5).
We drove into Chapter 2, the method of undetermined coefficients for linear differential equations. We more-or-less have it all covered, but we need to see more examples.
We had only 25 minutes of tutorial time — on homogeneous second order differential equations on Thursday.
Week 5
We will move to finish Chapter 2. Any remaining classes will be given over to tutorial time on Chapter 2.

15% Assignment 1
This should be started ASAP. This has a provisional hand in time and date of 11:00 Thursday 24 February. Please see Canvas.
Week 3
We finished Chapter 1 on Monday by looking at applications to temperature distribution, where the Jacobi Method is used to find approximate solutions to a diagonally dominant linear system.
If you want a deep dive into the temperature of a plate stuff there is a post here which explains — in great detail — how the ‘iterations’ are actually physically meaningful.
We had three classes of tutorials — Wednesday and the Thursday double. This means we have had more than five classes of tutorials in the first three weeks.
Week 4
We are now going to push to complete Chapter 2 over the next two weeks. Any remaining classes will be given over to tutorial time on Chapter 2/1.
I plan to talk about academic integrity for Assignment 1 on Monday, and hopefully do a Chapter 1 “concept MCQ” on Wednesday (technology depending).

Week 2
We finished the Gaussian Elimination examples on Monday, and began to look at applications of linear systems to traffic and pipe flow (Thursday).
Someone had an issue with Example 6 on p.26:

This is fixed here (with new additional comments):
We had more than two classes of tutorials — Wednesday and most of the Thursday double.
Week 3
We will finish the Chapter 1 material and finish the week off with more tutorial time.
15% Assignment 1
Information about Assignment 1 is now up on Canvas.

Week 1
We started the first chapter on Linear Algebra. Essentially, for us, simultaneous equations. We looked at Gaussian Elimination including Partial Pivoting, which is required in the presence of rounding. We looked at five examples, and had 15 minutes of tutorial time.
Gaussian Elimination Tutor
If you download Maple (see Student Resources), there is a Maple Tutor that is easy to use and will help you with Gaussian Elimination. Open up Maple and go to Tools -> Tutors -> Linear Algebra -> Gaussian Elimination.
Week 2
We will finish the Gaussian Elimination examples on Monday, and maybe begin to look at applications of linear systems to traffic and pipe flow.
We will have a tutorial on Wednesday.
Assignment 1
Assignment 1 has a (provisional) hand-in date of Thursday 24 February (Week 5). More information next week once the class list has settled down.

You have to put time to work on Chapter 3:
- because without doing so you could be very, very lost on 35% Assignment 3, and
- because if you are going into Level 8 Structural Engineering it will be assumed that you are competent with the Chapter 3 material
Assignment 1 & 2 Corrections
These have finally been released. Apologies for the delay. Any queries do not hesitate to contact me.
Week 10
Lectures
No lectures: all MATH7021 time to be invested into Chapter 3 and Assignment 3. See Week 11, below, if you have completed Assignment 3 and are hoping to look ahead.
Exercises
As I send this, there are two slots for feedback over Easter with deadlines of today, 5 April, for feedback, tomorrow, 6 April, and 12 April for feedback 13 April.
If you are up to date on the Week 7 exercises, put some time into:
- p.127, Q.1-11
Additional exercises p.130, Q.12-19.
Submit work for Canvas feedback by Monday 19 April for video feedback after Tuesday 20 March.
Weeks 11 and 12
Weeks 11 and 12 will be given over to Chapter 4. Perhaps of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Double Integrals (Links to an external site.) in Week 11 and of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Triple Integrals (Links to an external site.). Students who have already submitted Assignment 3 can look at the old lectures. The material is exactly the same… for the sake of of doing honest work I will be rerecording for Weeks 11 and 12, but if you want to get ahead you can watch these:
Week 11:
- Revision of Concept of Integration (Links to an external site.) (24 minutes)
- Concept of Double Integration (Links to an external site.) (23 minutes)
- Double Integral Examples (Links to an external site.) (29 minutes)
- Polar Coordinates for Double Integrals (Links to an external site.) (20 minutes)
- Double Integrals over Circular Regions: Examples (Links to an external site.) (13 minutes)
Week 12:
- Integration over a 3D Box (Links to an external site.) (12 minutes)
- Integration over a Cylinder (Links to an external site.) (15 minutes)
Re: Section 3.5 Systems of Differential Equations (Links to an external site.); important for next year, won’t be examined this semester but will get ye the notes and lectures before the end of year (so as to have them as a reference for next year).

Student Resources
Please see Student Resources (Links to an external site.) for information on the Academic Learning Centre, etc.
You have to put regular time to work on Chapter 3:
- because without doing so you could be very, very lost on 35% Assignment 3, and
- because if you are going into Level 8 Structural Engineering it will be assumed that you are competent with the Chapter 3 material
You need to get cracking on Chapter 3.
Assignment 1 & 2 Corrections
I am experiencing a hardware issue at the moment and it is making it difficult to get corrections done.. My promise is to complete corrections of both Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 before the end of Week 9. Sorry for the delay.
Week 9
Lectures
No lectures in Week 9. If you are behind please put big time into Chapter 3, catching up.
Exercises
If you are up to date on the Week 7 exercises, put some time into:
- p.127, Q.1-11
Additional exercises p.130, Q.12-19.
Submit work for Canvas feedback by Monday 29 March for video feedback after Tuesday 30 March.
Outlook
In Week 10 you will also spend all your time doing Chapter 3 Exercises/Assignment 3. It is my intention to continue providing learning support throughout the Easter break.
Section 3.5 Systems of Differential Equations. is important for next year but I have messed up and so it will not be examined. I will record lectures and fill in the notes for ye though during Easter once I am caught up on corrections.
Weeks 11 and 12 are given over to Chapter 4. Perhaps of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Double Integrals in Week 11 and of the order of 2 hours of lectures on Triple Integrals. If I see that students have submitted Assignment 3 early I may record these earlier than Weeks 11 and 12 (or student could look at the old lectures, the ones that say “integrals” here)
