Manuals

COMP1C are required to purchase an academic manual for MATH6055. This contains all the lecture notes and exercises for the module. The lecture notes contain gaps that we fill in during class. I will have notes for you for the first week but after that you must purchase the manual: the sooner the better.

The manuals can be purchased from Reprographics\Copy Centre beside the Student Centre. Note that this is a cash-free area so you will need to put the appropriate amount of funds — €14.10 — on your student card (here).

With all the materials (including worked examples, summaries, etc) it comes to 222 pages and provides a comprehensive resource for this module.

I will be writing in various colours, so maybe  a four colour pen would be useful.

Week 1

After listening to me go on about the importance of mathematics to your programme we started the first chapter on Sets and Relations by looking at some number sets. We saw something new with the concept of the power set of a set.

Week 2

In Week 3 we will look at the Laws of Sets and move onto Cartesian Products and Relations.

Academic Learning Centre

Have you heard about Maths Online on Canvas? It’s full of helpful Maths and Stats resources, notes, quizzes and videos to help you throughout the whole year.

We also use the Maths Online module on Canvas to offer Maths and Stats support to you and answer as many student questions as possible.

Please log on to Maths online to book a maths appointment, book a place in a supported maths study session or request a workshopLinks to an external site..

Supported Maths Study is on every Monday from 3.30pm – 5.30pm in B231.

Supported Statistics Study is on every Wednesday from 3pm – 4pm in B231.

If you have any other question about our Maths and Stats supports email us on Academic.Learning@mtu.ie

Assessment

See Canvas for the assessment plan and schedule.

Student Resources

Please see the Student Resources tab on the top of this page for information on the Academic Learning Centre, etc.

The manuals are available in the Copy Centre (at a cost of €15). In my opinion the sooner ye purchase them the better, but ye will certainly need them by Week 4.

Tutorials

The official line is that BioEng2A have their tutorial, BioEng2B have their tutorial, and SEE2 have a tutorial, but it is too big, so “The SEE2 excess go to (the) BioEng2B (tutorial)”. I think we have a better set up by allowing all students attend whatever tutorial they want:

  • Wednesday 12 pm in B180 (the official SEE2 tutorial slot),
  • Wednesday 3 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2A slot)
  • Friday 1 pm in B260 (the official BioEng2B + “SEE2 excess” slot)

I think SEE2 students can make all three and BioEng2 students can make two every week, and three some weeks. A number of students have asked can they attend more than one tutorial a week. As long as I can keep getting around to everyone to give one-to-one teaching I am happy with students attending more than one tutorial.

If it happens that the above plan doesn’t work, and some tutorial(s) is too big, I will have to think again.

The most important thing in your MATH6040 world is to attend tutorials regularly.

Test 1

The test will be the Tuesday evening, 11 October, of Week 5. See Canvas (MATH6040 —> Assignments) for further details.

Week 2

In Week 2 we spoke about vector products: the dot product and the vector product.

Week 3

In Week 3 we will Chapter 1, and the material for Test 1, by talking at the applications of vectors to work and moments

Test 2

Test 2 is provisionally booked for the Tuesday of Week 12:

06/12/202218.00-19.00MATH6040Technological Maths 20155A – C

However, this is too late, it should be Week 11, but the Melbourn Hall is provisionally unavailable in Week 11.

When the timetable system is back up and running again I will try and book a large IT room for this test, and I will also try and wing us into the Melbourn for 29 November.

So Test 2 is 99% going to be Tuesday 29 November but just in case I have booked the Melbourn for 6 December. This will be finalised by Week 9.

Note the timetable change for next week: Tuesday’s MATH7019 will be in A207 and Friday’s will be in A243L.

Week 2

We continued talking about (linear) Least Squares curve fitting. We had two full tutorial classes.

Week 3

We will look briefly at correlation, before looking at models that are not linear but log-linear. We may have good tutorial time again.

Assessment 1

Assessment 1 is now up on Canvas. It has a hand up date the Friday of Week 5, 14 October. Ye may start Problems A and D now.

Academic Learning Centre

I would urge anyone having any problems with material that isn’t being addressed in the tutorial communication to use the Academic Learning Centre. If you are a little worried about your maths this semester you need to be aware of this resource. You will get best results if you come to the helpers there ith specific questions.

Week 1

We covered Lagrange interpolation and did the theory — and first example — for Least Squares curve fitting.

Week 2

We will continue talking about Least Squares curve fitting. We might aim to have two tutorial classes.

Assessment 1

Assessment 1 has a provisional hand-in week of Week 5. Once the class list is established I can send on the student-number-personalised assessment.

Timetable Issues

For this week only, the SEE2 tutorial at 3 pm on Thursday will not go ahead. Instead the SEE2 tutorial will be held in A272 at 12 pm on Wednesday.

Please keep an eye on your email on Monday. If the AV situation is not sorted in A272 by then I will be trying to arrange alternative rooms (which has its own risks).

Week 1

We began our study of Chapter 1, Vector Algebra by studying the difference between a scalar (single number) and a vector (list of numbers). We looked at how to both visualise vectors and describe them algebraically. We learned how to find the magnitude  and direction of a vector, add them and scalar multiply them. We spoke about displacement vectors.

Week 2

In Week 2 we will talk about vector products: the dot product and the vector product.

Test 1

The test will probably be the Tuesday evening, 11 October, of Week 5. Official notice will be given in Week 3. There is a sample test in the notes.

Week 11

On Monday and Wednesday we continued to work on double integration. Between Wednesday and Thursday we completed example 2 on p.189.

People who have not watched the systems of ODE lecture on YouTube should do so.

There is also an abstract whiteboard YouTube lecture here.

We had maybe an hour and a half of tutorial time looking at systems of odes/double integration.

Week 12

On Monday we will work on triple integration. If needs be we will finish this material on Wednesday.

It is my plan also to give ye a look at your Assignment 1 and possibly your Assignment 2 if I have them corrected.
